Darren Shan

Darren Shan…

I think covers are the advertisement of products. I think most of you will agree that covers and jackets of books, CDs, etc tell a lot about what’s inside. We even change wrapping of gifts depending on what’s inside and who we give them to. Appearance is one of the simplest and most effective means to tempt customers.

I often buy books based on their covers (I know that I am NOT SUPPOSED TO… but I hardly ever fail. Hey, it’s not like I judge people by their appearance. It’s just books, ok??) Especially I lack information these days, I thought that I had no choice but to pick books with my instinct. And then Darren Shan caught my attention. It wasn’t that I liked the cover. There were just too MANY of them. From what I saw, they seemed to be children’s books (See the picture above. That’s a cover for Japanese version.) There were piles and piles of the series so I thought I will never get my hands on. It will cost too much.

When I looked carefully, it seemed to be from England. Oh, then I can real the original! I asked my reading buddy who has also been in the States, and she said I should never ever read Darren Shan in Japanese. She said it’s just like Harry Potter (for those who don’t know, Japanese translation of Harry Potter is beyond the level of dreadful.) But she also said that I will probably like them in English. She never recommended me of a book that I didn’t like, so I decided to go with it.

At a bookstore. Darren Shan… Darrren Shan…
Eh? Why can’t I find it? They are in alphabetical order… did I spell it wrong…??

!?

No wonder that I couldn’t find it. Look at the second pic. That was how it looked originally. Gee, what a different impression.

If I saw this cover first, I would have bought one without asking my friend. Also, the Japanese subtitle for the first volume is “Strange Circus.” Hey… it sounds AWFULLY different from “Cirque De Freak”…

I decided to buy a Trilogy that has 3 volumes in one. \2310 (about $23) was a bit expensive, but I guess I would want to read the next if I read one, and the price is for 3, so I shouldn’t be too bad.

It is an interesting novel on its own. People often compare it with Harry Potter but the story is darker with sorrow, anger, hatred, hostility, and death. The story proceeds chronologically so it’s quite simple.

But what’s most striking is that there is no obvious mission. Fantasy novels usually have some kind of goal- beat the evil king, return the ring, save the princess, etc, etc. They might not be clear, but we can usually guess, like in the case of Harry Potter. We all expect a battle between Harry and You-know-who, right? Missions are the power to keep the story going and attract readers. But there is none in Darren Shan.

What is gonna be of Darren? What will happen next? What will be waiting for them at the end of their journey? The future hides itself in a dark and we can’t guess.

Each volume is about 200pages, so maybe the goal will be clear later. I am at the beginning of volume 3 anyway. But when I noticed that, I thought that I would have to keep buying… shit. I was caught in their trap.

When I look around Japanese bookstores today, I am amazed to see numbers of foreign (most English-written) books today. It wasn’t like this 10 years ago, when I had to go far away to buy foreign books. I don’t know if the number of foreigners are increasing or the Japanese are becoming smarter, but I appreciate this fact.

But… is the level of translation catching up with this increase?? It is a famous story in Japan and translation of Harry Potter sucked. I only glanced at it but Darren Shan seemed to be no better. I know the difficulty and the limitation of translation… but I strongly disagree the way they translate those fantasy… like kiddy stuff.
