Thanks, Sorry, and Withdrawal
Not in Education, Employment, or Trainingの略語である。

Thanks, Sorry, and Withdrawal_b0005123_1421679.jpg

NEET stands for "Not in Education, Employment, or Training." Research says that there is an increase of NEET among young people recently.

…Are they talking about ME!?

Geez. I learned this word in “NEET” by Yuji Genda and Mie Kusenuma. What’s interesting is that they associated this word with Withdrawal. They argue that NEET is a prerequisite for withdrawal. I hardly ever read this kind of books but I read an article about it on Nikkei Newspaper because the following statement got my attention.

“People argue causes of NEET; inability to get appropriate job, lack of will in education, dysfunctional family, etc, yet nobody has yet to come to the conclusion. It is because there are multiple causes that are entangled with each other and it is hard for us to sort them. Then how can we solve withdrawal? Genda answers that the solution is to be thankful. Japanese “Thank you (Arigatou)” means “not easy to come by,” and Genda believes that it is important to realize how precious things right in front of us are.”

This is just a gist of it. “Not easy to come by,” huh?

It is true that I get an urge to say thank you whenever I have a chance since I have lived in the States for so long. But it is just a matter of habit and I don’t think it like it is not easy to come by so I must be thankful. Maybe authors have forgotten but the degree of thankfulness and years left to live are negatively correlated. It will be another 40 years for me to be truly thankful for everything in front of me. However, there is another word that has been bothering me since I came home.

We had a delivery this morning. I overheard the conversation between my mom and delivery guy.
“Hello! This is Kuroneko-delivery! Sorry, but we have a parcel.”
“Yes, yes, I am sorry.”
“Ok, here it is… sorry, is it ok to put it here?”
“Sure, sorry about that.”
“Then would you please stamp here? Sorry.”
“Oh, here? Sorry.”
“Sorry to bother you. Please pardon my leave.”

SORRY MY ASS (by chucky)

This is what I think. I say hell to the life that I always have to feel sorry. If someone helps me, I want to say thank you (not in the meaning of “not easy to come by,” but just a simple gratitude) rather than sorry.

Originally, it is the Japanese culture to be humble and to put oneself down in order to honor others, so I am sure lots of people disagree with my idea. But I just want to say that there is an option to honor others without putting yourself down. There could be other ways, because we are all different. I feel that the real problem is people’s attitude that makes us feel sorry for being different, and that eliminates ways of self expressions. Of course, you and I are also members of “people.” In this way, “social problem” is merely social but personal.

Before everybody becomes able to say thanks, maybe we should have “Elimination of “sorry” Act” or something like that. This is going extreme and I realize we must not forget the feeling of apology, so maybe we can replace 2 out of 5 “sorry” to “thanks”?

The solution seems idealistic and simplistic. Yet it gets my attention for the fact that the author is a associate professor of Labor Economics at Tokyo University. I will read it when I have a chance…
