History, you read

The most popular type of criticism toward historical manga/anime is that the story/characters are too different from the “historical facts.” I became interested in Japanese history bacsue of Ruroni Kenshin (or Samurai X), but I heard that the author received tons of complaints. The story is about the end of Edo era and the beginning of Meiji. It is often regarded as a turning point in Japanese history so many people glorify samurais who fought their way through.

I didn’t really know much about history, but I seriously doubted people’s idea of precision. I mean, look at the first picture. This is a real pic from the manga and here, Kenshin is spinning his sword to ward off flame. Would you really ask any kind of precision or authenticity for this kind of manga?? This is fiction and there’s no need to ask.

I think that there is one thing that we should always remember when trying to enjoy any story based on history. It’s that we could never reproduce history. So many facts have been lost so the rest is up to our creativity. For example, if the author doesn’t know the face of a certain individual, he somehow has to create it, right? Such is the nature of historical fiction. I guess there is no “non-fiction” about it.

I can understand wishes like “I wanted this scene into your manga” or “I wish so-and-so’s face was cuter,” but what’s the point of complaining about it, really?

And also, I fear our vulnerability to believe that history is the truths. We tend to think that there is only one history, but if you study abroad, you will know that there is more than one reality out there. Take WWII for example. Each country has it’s own explanation for it. Your history is just yours, and not absolute. What we know is merely partial information of what people in upper position want us to know.

I was averaging about 20/100 in Japanese history until 11th grade, but what changed me is one manga, that maximized the benefit of uncertainty of history.

I don’t know how famous “Shinsengumi” is. It is a name for a group of Samurai that fought to protect Japan in their own way. I seriously suck at explaining Japanese history, so I suggest you to research by yourself if you are interested.

But if you want to see a funny & sad side of them, why don’t you check out “Peace Maker” and “Peace Maker Kurogane”? What I love about this manga/anime is not the picture. I mean, I like it, but…

The voice of Souji Okita is Mitsuki Saiga!!!!

Umm…?? You don’t know who this is?? Mitsuki Saiga is the person who did Tsukasa/Elk of .hack series…

By the way, Peace Maker was recommended by my dear Korean friend, who loves Japanese drama and anime, have no fear for copy right, and in love with Yuji Oda and Masahiro Nakai. Thanks my friend!
