“Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.” I just realized that I had a huge misunderstanding about one of the seven deadly sins, “Gluttony.” I always thought it was only about eating too much, but a description on a website say; “Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.” …What? So I guess it includes not only food but also other things that can be consumed. Then what’s the difference between Greed and Gluttony?? I found out. Greed is more materialistic than Gluttony. Greed seeks money, authority, and properties while Gluttony seeks food and physical pleasure. So Gluttony also deals with relational demands as well. I guess the reason why it’s almost always associated with overeating is because it’s visually powerful. I entered the door to the Hell of Gluttony when I was 19. I arrived at a small backwater town in MI with a medium-sized suitcase and nothing more. I wasn’t particularly brave or smart... I just didn’t know that there was NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION there. Didn’t have a car, couldn’t speak English, and I was thrown into on-campus apartment instead of a dorm. Without any dishes or pots and means of communication, starvation was unavoidable. (My roommate called me from somewhere to invite me to the dinner, but how was I supposed to answer the phone without being able to speak English?) And the summer in MI was cold like HELL. I was freezing. I was starving. And there was 200lbs-roommate on top of the bunk bed. My nerve was at threshold with extreme anxiety and tension. I trembled as her snoring shook out tiny apt, and I was determined to check the dictionary first thing in the morning to learn the word “snore.” SNORE is the first English word I leaned since I came to the U.S. So my miserable eating habit started. I learned how to cook, shop, (and of course, I learned English!) and I learned to appreciate variety of food that I could not eat before. It’s all because of my never-ending feeling of starvation. The downside of this is I started buying more food than I need. After all, I didn’t need a gallon of milk or 4 boxes of cereals or 10 fresh corns or dozens of eggs…and they were wasted. What’s even worse is that I always ate too much because I was afraid that I would miss next meal because of my tight schedule. I became Gluttony. Ever since I noticed my bad habit, I consciously started managing my purchasing habit and diet. I learned that I should not buy a head of cabbage or large watermelon that I cannot even lift. (When that happened, I only made other customers laugh.) One of the most important things I’ve learned by living alone is the knowledge to manage myself. Everything has a “midpoint” and anything extreme should be avoided. My job as a poor gluttony is to find out what’s best for me financially, physically, and mentally. byケロヨン
