MPD-PSYCHO
Even if you like Japanese anime/manga, you still might not know Sho-u Tajima. He was an animation character designer in Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” and he also created great manga like “BROTHERS” and “Basara.”
Ever since Basara captured my heart, his sharp drawings and complicated plots got me addicted. During this year’s spring break, I found this series at a bookstore in LA. Since it was import, it cost nearly $8 a volume and that hurt.

I could guess from the title that the story will be complicated for sure because the main character has multiple personality disorder (I should point out that we don’t use the term anymore. Nowadays, we call is dissociative identity disorder). But murders keep happening. Pictures are pretty realistic, too. Many readers commented this manga is gross. Yet the original author Eiji Ootsuka wrote;

“Whenever a tragedy occurs, comic, animation, and video games become the targets of criticism for portraying deaths as just symbols… For example, if there is no corpse drawn in a sci-fi story in which an incident supposedly killed some large number of people on the earth, then a death in such sense is merely a symbol. It is not my goal to portray corpse. However, I think that my intention will not be fully expressed without constructing the world in which a corpse exists as a corpse.”

That is right. We live in a gross, gross world. We can’t just be in la-la-land with a flower garden and a puppy. Some might think it is meaningless to be that realistic. Some might even say that it is harmful. But I want to say this. How many manga or stories that have power to make you recall characters that died, not even having one word to say, early in a story? A death of an unrelated someone. I can’t describe this manga as nothing but great for giving me such a huge impact on such deaths…’cause I always wonder what’s gonna happen to characters who die.

The story of this manga is moving toward rather strange direction right now… Oh well, I am looking forward to next.
