One day in a forest

One day in a forest_b0005123_21145355.jpg

We have a bear problem in Japan. We are observing unusual amount of rain from series of Typhoons this year, and as a consequence, there isn’t much food left for wild animals. For past few weeks, people reported the appearance of wild bears in towns and media loved that news. Everyday, we hear about poor starving bears caught in net.

And then I found an interesting article on Yomiuri newspaper today. It said
Too much donation for bears: We are having large response from people who are willing to donate nuts for bears… NPO has already received 200 boxes of nuts and their phone lines are always busy due to the tremendous number of calls from all over the world. They will temporarily discontinue this donation program… From now on, they will be looking for people who can work on sites.”

I hear that people normally think that bears are cute. Winnie the Pooh, Teddy Bears…
I used to own two teddy bears that I got as gifts. I don’t particularly like them but I don’t hate them either. When I think about an encounter with wild bear, it’s hard for me to think that those teddies are that trustworthy. Anyway, I don’t hate any living things. They are all parts of the nature and we need all to maintain balance. I think that’s how it should be, whether I like it or not.

Yet, people say bears are cute.

Bunnies and minks will make an excellent winter coats, and crocodiles and snakes will turn themselves to beautiful bags and shoes! Cows and Pigs and Chickens are yummy, but oh no! Please save bears!!

I really don’t understand it. Why do we always decide what to protect and what to kill, and pretend like that’s the order of nature? Isn’t that called arrogance and that’s the cause of most destruction of the earth?? Media tells us limited information and the influence is unbelievably strong, yet people tend to ignore things that are not in media.

I will never say that we should not help bears. At this point, it is our responsibility to help them. But I think that what’s important is to think about what we could have done and our ignorance. Why did we not notice until they came down to us? Is the bad weather the only cause of food shortage? It was us who cut down trees and took away their habitats and food.

It must feel really good to “help” poor bears. Yet I think it is just clearing one’s charge. I feel that the only “good” thing we can do to animals and nature is to destroy the civilization and decrease the number of humans.

How would we feel if there’s a species that preys on humans? Will we be able to accept our existence as preys? What about our “consciousness”? Are humans’ lives more important than others’?

There’s an astonishing Manga that tackled these questions without any hesitation. It’s “Kiseijyu” (meaning parasite beast). It describes people’s fear, agony, and sadness when they turned into preys. Pictures are incredible and ideas are skull-shaking. It is definitely one of my best 20 comics. (First picture above)

There is also a famous Japanese writer who presented his deep thoughts on the relationship between humans and animals. It’s Kenji Miyazawa. He is famous for children’s books and short stories, and one of his works “A restaurant with many orders” is a classic. I vividly remember “Pig at Frandon Agricultural School.”

It was too shocking to me as a little child. I will not recommend it to young children, but all of his works make us think about what we are, and how each one of us should deal with our existence.

I think it’s important to think about what we need to do, before animals are forces to take their last step. And it’s not only bears that are starving. There are thousands of others out there who suffer because of us. It’s often too late when it’s public.
