The Samurai Family
The Samurai Family_b0005123_2143452.jpg

My entire family loves historical drama (called Jidai-geki). It’s not the end of year yet but they were broadcasting Chushingura tonight, so I was watching. Chushingura is a famous story about a certain incident during Edo era and since the actual incident happened at the end of year, it became a tradition to dramatize it and broadcast in December.

Then I remembered something bitter. Japanese Samurai movies are quite different from Western movies. I can’t say exactly, but they are different. It was when I was in Michigan and my American friend and I were at a video store. We found “Chushingura” there.
“Hey, this is Samurai stuff, right? What’s it about?”

…I suck. It is entirely my fault that it turned out like;

“Umm, see, there was a Samurai with high status, and another who is from country side, and the higher rank Samurai told the other a lie about what to wear at a certain event. Right? So the rural one got pissed and slashed the rich one. Shogun ordered the rural one to do Harakiri and destroyed the family, thought any argument was supposed to be tried equally. Then the Samurai family of the rural one became really mad and they avenged his death, and they did Harakiri and died at the end.”

You might think this is OK. It’s a bit confusing, but you might think it’s just fine. BUT IT’S NOT.
It does not portray the seriousness of the event and the importance of Bushido. It might be a bit hard to understand that revenge was somewhat permitted during this era only that it cost his life. And avenging for someone's dishonor was highly valued.

This explanation make the rural Samurai look like a mad man. Yeah it was just about clothing, but it was important. Samurais are very proud. I am afraid that my friend didn’t understand how beautiful this story was.

But I noticed that the concept of revenge for honor exist in the West. The famous movie about Billy the Kid, “Young Guns” nicely described concepts of “family” and “friends.” I am sure you all know the story. The only difference might be that Samurai think death is also a virtue so they voluntarily end their lives at right occasions.

At any rate, I really don’t want people to ask me about Japanese history and Royal house and stuff like that in English. But sure, as soon as I wish something like that, someone will ask me;
“Can you tell me about the governmental structure in ancient Japan?”

HOW THE HELL SHOULD I KNOW?
